Robotic arm

I am building intelligent robotic arm ,and i am using orocos for the programming part.In the robot there are three links and gripper. for driving the same i am using four servo motors. I have finished with the mechanical part and also the circuit for driving servo motors. I have started reading orocos basics,i wanted to know what steps should be followed at the initial stage and how to go through the programming of the entire robotic arm?
