Proposed quick survey for IDE usage

Hi

I would like know if anybody have recently surveyed the users of Oroco
for the IDE that they use within the past 6 months? If not, then I
would like to shoot off an informal survery email.

Thanks

Any big change or code browsing is done in Eclipse. Smaller changes
and CMakeLists.txt editing is done in emacs.

I currently use Code::Blocks. It's lightweight so it can run on small
embedded computers running X. However I very like Eclipse since I've used it
in a Java project.

On my personnal laptop (under Ubuntu) I use gedit.

On the embedded processor (under a stable Debian) I use emacs.

Eclipse seems attractive to me (even more with an Orocos plugin), but
the learning time seems huge!

Charles.

Proposed quick survey for IDE usage

Thank you Stephen, Charles, Philippe and David. for your responses.

>From your answers I have created the following questionnaire and would
like to petition you and anybody else to answer.

Thank you in advance.

=====

Which Orocos projects do you use :
Real-Time Toolkit =
Kinematics and Dynamics Library =
Bayesian Filtering Library =
Orocos Component Library.=

Do you develop exclusively on your target embedded system (YES | NO)?

IF YES:

Does your embedded system support X (YES | NO)?

Does your embedded system support Java (YES | NO)?

Would it be possible to develop code for your embedded system on
your main system and then transfer the code to your embedded system?

EVREYONE:

Do you use a text only editor or IDE and if so which one?

Do you use a graphical IDE and if so which one?

What is your main OS and what is your embedded OS (32/64 bit)?

Which programming languages do you use for development?

Other software related to your project that you use?

Have you ever used Eclipse on a regular basis in any project (YES | NO)?

On a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 = beginner and 5 = expert, rate your
experience with Eclipse?

Thank you again :)

I'm a happy CodeBlocks IDE user. However, I would like to combine Orocos
with Qt, CodeBlocks is not very suitable for this. Therefor considering to
switch to QtCreator or Eclipse.

What is your main OS and what is your embedded OS (32/64 bit)?
ArchLinux, 32 bit

Thank you again :)

Cheers, Theo.

Before answering, I'm curious why you are doing the survey, what you
intend to do with any results/analysis, and will said results/analysis
be made available to this ML?

It's not clear to me either where this is going.

The immediate goal is to take the first step in understanding the
users of Orocos and their needs. I am approaching first the dev list
with the goal of refining a first general short survey for the users
list and other related lists. The result will be collated and publicly
available on the Orocos wiki for anyone to analyze as they wish.

The first product of value will be completion of an Eclipse primer
combining the knowledge from the survey and the available pages. Just
as an example of how I am thinking based of the information at this
point.. It seems that creating a simple help plug-in with some cheat
sheets and some useful run configurations that will get someone up to
speed quickly to using Eclipse + Orocos would be helpful and of value.
But first I have to finish my adventure in "Another Way for Using
Eclipse and Orocos" in order to understand the domain better.

As for my intentions... I just enjoy doing this kind of work.

Please feel free to contact me with any question, comments or
suggestions you may have.

This list has proven not to be the ultimate source for Eclipse
knowledge. Looking at your questions, I would recommend to find a
project that already uses Eclipse's Target Management/Remote System
Explorer, or other Eclipse-for-embedded features. A good starting
point is http://www.eclipse.org/home/categories/index.php?category=mobile
which collects most recent information about using Eclipse for
embedded.

The rtt-exercises package already contains eclipse projects to build
the exercises (using custom Makefiles), but the mainline RTT/OCL/...
don't.

yes. It is what we always do. we work on normal desktop and we
cross-compile for the embedded platform.

Emacs + command line.

It is the only option on some of the embedded platforms I work on.
Would like to convert to Eclipse, but not until more of my machines
can support/hack it.

YMMV
